Man City agree £125m fee for Chelsea’s Fernandez

Manchester City have reached an agreement to pay a joint-British record fee of £125 million for Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez. The 26-year-old Argentine joined Chelsea from Benfica in 2023 for a then-British record fee of £107 million. This transfer matches the £125 million that Liverpool paid for Alexander Isak on the same day last summer.

Negotiations between the two clubs have been ongoing for the past 24 hours, and they have finally agreed on the terms. Fernandez is set to undergo a medical examination and sign a long-term deal at the Etihad Stadium. Personal terms have not been an issue in the transfer. Fernandez previously worked with City manager Enzo Maresca when he was in charge at Chelsea.

Maresca is eager to work with Fernandez again after losing several midfielders this summer. Fernandez, however, was not part of Chelsea's squads during their recent wins, as some reports in Argentina claimed he had asked to be excluded from the team. This is the second time this summer that City have broken their own transfer record, with the £116 million signing of Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest being their previous record-breaking move.
