Man arrested for allegedly murdering estranged wife despite protection order

In Gwangju, South Korea, a man in his 30s was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly stabbing and killing his estranged wife, also in her 30s, according to police. The suspect, who holds a public servant position, was apprehended at a motel in Suwon, South Korea, just hours after the alleged incident occurred at around 7 a.m. on September 1st, as reported by Gwangju police authorities.

The victim, who was concurrently undergoing legal divorce proceedings with the suspect, utilized a police-issued smartwatch to summon assistance during the alleged attack; however, she succumbed to her injuries following transport to a hospital. Police stated that the smartwatch had been issued to the victim owing to a documented history of domestic violence involving five prior reports against the husband.

The victim had also secured a court-issued temporary protection order, which strictly prohibited the suspect from approaching her within 100 meters or making any contact, and mandated separate living arrangements. Authorities believe the suspect pinpointed the victim's new address through deliveries of court documents. Police have announced their intention to interrogate the suspect to gather additional details surrounding the alleged homicide.
