Maharashtra Scraps Hindi Language Exam Requirement For Government Employees After Review

Mumbai: The Maharashtra government has announced plans to discontinue the mandatory Hindi language examination for government employees, as per a recent government resolution issued by the Marathi Language Department. This decision comes after a review of the examination's relevance in today's administrative setup. The Hindi language examination, previously conducted by the Maharashtra Rashtrabhasha Sabha Mandal and later by the Directorate of Languages, has now been cancelled.

The resolution points out that the requirement for Hindi examinations originated from the pre-Maharashtra era, when Hindi was mandatory for government employees. However, following Maharashtra's formation, Marathi became the official language for state government work. The government further observed the evolving nature of official work and the increasing use of English in official communications, both within the government and across state lines.

Consequently, the examination is being discontinued with effect from May 9, 2026. This decision also applies to all related government decisions, circulars, orders, and official instructions concerning the Hindi language examination.
