Maharashtra Extends PoP Idol Immersion Guidelines Till Bombay HC Verdict

Mumbai: The Maharashtra government has announced that the guidelines governing the immersion of Plaster of Paris (PoP) idols will remain in effect until the Bombay High Court delivers its final verdict, according to a circular issued on Monday. The guidelines were initially introduced on August 1, 2025, in response to interim directions from the High Court to promote eco-friendly celebrations.

Municipal corporations, councils, and other local bodies have been instructed to strictly adhere to these rules until the court's decision.

According to the guidelines, PoP idols must display a discernible red circular mark, painted with oil paint, on their rear side. Idol manufacturers and sellers are now required to keep records of PoP idol sales. Public and household idols up to six feet in height must be immersed in artificial ponds, while those taller than six feet can only be immersed in natural water bodies if no other option is available.

In such cases, the municipal body responsible for the immersion must clean the seabed or water body the following day and dispose of the idol remnants in a scientifically sound manner.

The guidelines also promote the use of smaller or symbolic idols for immersion while retaining larger idols for reuse in the following year. Local authorities have been directed to treat water and silt from artificial immersion ponds, using lime or alum within seven days, and storing the silt for up to 15 days before potential reuse, with the help of institutions like the National Chemical Laboratory (NCL).

Additionally, local bodies need to run extensive public awareness campaigns, install explanatory signboards, and arrange for the collection of religious offerings like nirmalya. The government has emphasized the importance of strict adherence to the guidelines while promoting environmentally responsible festival celebrations throughout the state.
