Mahama calls for stronger climate finance, renewable energy investment for developing nations

President John Mahama has urged for enhanced climate finance, improved adaptation assistance, and intensified investment in renewable energy to aid developing countries in tackling the escalating impacts of climate change. Addressing the issue of climate change, Mahama emphasized the necessity for developed nations to extend sufficient financial and technical aid to countries that are disproportionately impacted by climate change, despite their minimal contribution to global emissions.

Delivering his remarks at the 65th Anniversary High-Level Meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) in Belgrade, Serbia, Mahama highlighted Ghana's forthcoming chairmanship of the African Union (AU) in 2027, as well as its role as the leader of the African Group of Negotiators on Climate Change. He noted that these positions would serve as a significant platform to advance Africa's interests in global climate negotiations.

Mahama also implored members of the NAM to bridge the digital divide, ensuring that developing countries actively participate in technological innovation and development. He cautioned against the scenario where nations in the Global South continue to be mere consumers of emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence, stressing the importance of their involvement in technology development and governance.

Mahama argued that robust international collaboration would be crucial to guarantee that developing countries can cultivate resilient economies while receiving equitable benefits from technological progress and the global shift towards clean energy.
