Louisville high school football game moved up due to extreme heat

As extreme heat looms in Louisville this week, high school football teams are facing adjustments to practice and game schedules. One notable game, between Valley and Southern programs from the Jefferson County Public Schools, has been rescheduled. Originally set for Sept. 3, the game will now take place tonight at 8 p.m. Southern coach Nelson Jackson explained that moving the game to Friday or Saturday was not feasible due to a lack of officials or Labor Day travel plans.

Jackson acknowledged that both teams will need to adapt to the sudden schedule change, noting that Valley may also have to scramble to find a solution. The coach emphasized that the players, being 16 years old, are excited to play despite the challenge. Southern's recent loss of 45-0 to Atherton on Aug. 28 has left them with only three days off before tonight's match.

Jackson reassured that the quick turnaround is not a concern, as students playing on Friday nights are accustomed to coming back the next day for another game. The Kentucky High School Athletic Association has issued guidelines for dealing with extreme heat, recommending mandatory water and rest breaks every 30 minutes, halting the use of protective gear if the heat index reaches 100-104 degrees, and ceasing all outdoor activities if the heat index rises above 105 degrees.
