Looking to rent a GetGo vehicle to drive to Malaysia? Here’s what you need to know
GetGo users can book on its app a vehicle to drive anywhere in West Malaysia without mileage charges.
Starting Sept 1, car-sharing platform GetGo will allow Singaporean travelers to rent eligible vehicles and drive them across the border to Malaysia. This feature, called Drive to Malaysia (DTM), is GetGo's first foray into cross-border travel. Currently, there are about 200 DTM-eligible vehicles in GetGo's fleet, with the possibility of adding more based on demand.
To rent a DTM vehicle, users must book through the GetGo app, selecting their preferred date, time, and duration of booking, which must be at least 12 hours. DTM bookings can be made up to 30 days in advance, with a maximum of five days per booking. Users must filter for DTM-eligible vehicles by selecting the "Drive to Malaysia (New)" checkbox on the search results page.
Renters will not need to put down a deposit for DTM bookings, and a cross-border surcharge of 30% of the time charged will be applied. The surcharge is capped at $20 per day for weekdays and the eve of public holidays, and $30 per day for weekends and public holidays. For vehicles under the "Select" category, the surcharge is capped at $20 a day, while for "Plus" category vehicles, the cap is $25 a day.
DTM-eligible vehicles are available only in the "Select" and "Plus" categories. Renters are responsible for their own fuel in both Singapore and Malaysia. Collision damage waiver, priced at 10% of the total cost (normal) and 20% of the total cost (enhanced), is an optional coverage. A flat fee of $1.20 will also be charged as a platform fee.
To cross the border, users must carry a valid passport valid for at least six months, a valid physical driving license, and a NETS CashCard with at least $10 in stored value and a physical Touch ‘n Go card with at least RM50 loaded for the cross-border charge, toll, and parking fees. Drivers must fill up the tank to at least three-quarters full before crossing the border, as failing to do so may result in a fine of up to $500 or prosecution.
At the toll gantry, users should tap the physical TnG card, not the TnG app. They should use only RON97 fuel or higher fuel grades. Renters are responsible for their own fuel at all stages of any DTM booking, and there will be no reimbursement.
