Lindsay Clancy murder trial: Jurors fail to reach unanimous verdict; What happens with a hung jury?

Jurors in Lindsay Clancy's murder trial for the deaths of her three young children are still unable to reach a unanimous verdict after four days of deliberation. Judge William Sullivan instructed the jury to continue their discussions following their note that they were unable to come to a decision. The trial has lasted nearly six weeks, and the jurors are expected to return to the deliberation room to continue their deliberations.

A hung jury situation occurs when jurors cannot agree on a verdict after an extended period of deliberation. However, this note does not necessarily mean the jury is officially hung. If jurors ultimately remain deadlocked, the judge could declare a mistrial, allowing for a new trial with a new jury. Clancy is accused of killing her three children - Cora, Dawson, and Callan - at their home in Duxbury on January 24, 2023.

They died after being strangled with exercise bands in the basement. Clancy subsequently attempted suicide by jumping from a second-story window, surviving but left paralysed. Her defense attorney argues that Clancy was experiencing postpartum psychosis at the time of the killings, while prosecutors focus on events leading up to the murders, including Clancy sending her husband out and mapping his return time.

If convicted of first-degree murder, Clancy faces life in prison without parole. A hung jury and mistrial are different from a not-guilty verdict, as acquittal usually prevents retrial due to double jeopardy protections.
