LG funds will go directly to council accounts if I’m President – Atiku

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, the candidate for Nigeria's 2027 presidential election representing the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has pledged to uphold a Supreme Court ruling that grants financial autonomy to Nigeria's 774 local government areas if elected. According to a statement released on Tuesday by his spokesperson, Kenneth Okonkwo, Atiku's administration will ensure that funds allocated to local governments from the Federation Account are paid directly to the councils, bypassing state governments.

The Supreme Court delivered this judgment on July 11, 2024, following a case brought by the Federal Government against the 36 state governors regarding control and funding of local governments. However, some states have not fully implemented the ruling. Atiku emphasized that his administration would respect court judgments, safeguard local government autonomy, guarantee that public funds reach those they are meant for, and restore genuine federalism.

He stated that direct access to funds would enable local governments to provide essential services and undertake development projects more effectively. Improving local government capacity could also enhance security at the grassroots by addressing crime and terrorism while alleviating poverty.

Atiku further accused President Bola Tinubu's administration of neglecting the enforcement of the Supreme Court ruling. He alleged that the government had shied away from confronting certain state governors over the matter because local government funds were being used to garner their support for Tinubu's re-election bid in the 2027 presidential election.

Atiku affirmed that granting local governments control over their statutory allocations would enhance accountability and ensure that money intended for grassroots development is utilized appropriately.
