Keir Starmer announces he is standing down as MP

Former Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has announced his decision to step down as an MP, focusing instead on a role in international affairs. This move will lead to a by-election in his London constituency of Holborn and St Pancras, a seat he has represented since 2015. Sir Keir had previously stated he would remain an MP until the next UK general election, which is not until 2029.

However, in a surprise announcement, he revealed his resignation to work on issues such as international affairs, defence, security, trade, and technology, as well as continuing his efforts to combat violence against women and girls. The former Prime Minister emphasized that his time in Parliament has been "a huge honour and privilege" and that it is the "right time" for him to leave.

The by-election in Holborn and St Pancras, a Labour stronghold, is expected to cost taxpayers, with Conservative chairman Kevin Hollinrake accusing Sir Keir of making another "U-turn" after initially pledging to stay on.
