Kallas summarizes EU Defense Ministers’ discussions on Ukraine

EU High Representative Kaja Kallas summarized discussions among EU defense ministers in Ireland regarding Ukraine's military needs. Kallas highlighted the importance of modernized military training bases for Ukraine and thanked member states, including Ireland, for announcing additional financing. The ministers discussed the future of the EUMAM training mission, aiming to establish a coordination group in Kyiv to enhance military education and battlefield lessons.

Irish Defense Minister Helen McEntee revealed Ireland's contribution of €10 million, with Denmark pledging €3 million. Kallas emphasized that air defense remains the EU's top priority, noting the shortage of ballistic-missile defense weapons globally. No specific commitments were made by member states to provide interceptors currently in their stocks, so discussions will continue.

Kallas stressed that each interceptor provided to Ukraine helps prevent Russian missiles from hitting Ukrainian schools, homes, or hospitals, strengthening European security. The EU has allocated €8.47 billion in military support to Ukraine this year and will provide more, but additional bilateral support from member states is needed.

Kallas also mentioned calls for advancing funding for Ukraine initially planned for 2027, but this does not include funds from the EU's €90 billion loan to Ukraine.
