Jury finds ex-gang leader guilty of murder in Tupac killing case

A Las Vegas jury has convicted Duane Keffe D Davis, a former leader of the Southside Compton Crips gang, of murder in the 1996 killing of rapper Tupac Shakur. Davis, 63, was charged with first-degree murder using a deadly weapon. The jury deliberated for nearly three hours before reaching a unanimous guilty verdict. Davis pleaded not guilty at the start of the trial.

He told the judge he intends to appeal the decision. Davis was accused of leading a group of men to kill Shakur, a prominent hip-hop artist, in retaliation for the beating of Davis' nephew. Police had long suspected Davis but lacked sufficient evidence until he publicly disclosed his account and provided incriminating tapes. Davis was charged based on his statements and recordings, even though he did not personally fire the weapon.

The trial commenced on August 17, 2021. Prosecutors presented hours of audio recordings where Davis expressed outrage over Shakur and his entourage assaulting his nephew at a Las Vegas casino. Davis stated that he offered a gun to the backseat during the subsequent pursuit of Shakur and record label executive Marion "Suge" Knight, ultimately leading to the fatal shooting.

The three other individuals present have since passed away. Davis' defense lawyer argued that his client's accounts were exaggerated bravado without corroborative evidence. The gang conflict between the Southside Compton Crips and Shakur's affiliated Mob Piru gang played a significant role in rap music's violent image during the "gangsta" rap era.
