John Galliano pulls US exhibition after antisemitism backlash

Fashion designer John Galliano has decided to cancel his planned exhibition at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art due to backlash over his past antisemitic remarks. Galliano announced his decision on Instagram, expressing sadness and stating he remains accountable for the pain caused by his past actions. Galliano was convicted in 2011 of making racist and antisemitic comments, and was previously fired from his position as creative director at Dior.

The Metropolitan Museum had planned a nine-month exhibition of Galliano's work for May but faced opposition from influential Jewish figures and city council speaker Julie Menin. Galliano acknowledged the controversy, expressing gratitude for the support he has received and recognizing the difficulty the exhibition would cause for some.

The Met confirmed the cancellation and stated a new exhibition will be announced at a later date. Galliano's former boss at Vogue, Anna Wintour, also endorsed the decision, praising Galliano's courage.
