Johannesburg needs a mayor focused on local problems, not foreign conflicts

Johannesburg faces pressing social, economic, and infrastructural issues that demand a mayor focused on local matters rather than foreign conflicts. The incoming mayor must tackle deteriorating infrastructure, high unemployment, violent crime, poverty, and service-delivery failures. The city, home to five million residents, must prioritize maintaining, upgrading, and expanding essential services like water, sanitation, roads, housing, public parks, and cemeteries.

A mayor who puts the Johannesburg community first and champions social cohesion is vital for creating a vibrant business and investment destination. However, candidates like Dr Tlaleng Mofokeng of the EFF, Reverend Frank Chikane of the ANC, and Lukhona Mnguni of RISE Mzansi, known for their strong criticism of Israel and focus on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, might divert attention from urgent local priorities.

Their engagement with international issues could undermine their ability to address critical domestic challenges effectively. A mayor's political capital should be better spent on tackling unemployment, crime, poverty, inadequate infrastructure, and unreliable service delivery than becoming entangled in international disputes over which the municipality has little influence.
