Janmashtami 2026: ISKCON Temples In Mumbai Prepare Special Costumes, Grand Celebrations For Krishna Janmotsav

As Mumbai gears up for Janmashtami, the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) temples at Girgaon Chowpatty and Juhu are gearing up for a grand celebration. The deities at Girgaon will be dressed in unique outfits, with Sri Sri Radha Gopinath adorned in a garb inspired by a verse from Srila Krishnadasa Kaviraja Goswami’s Govinda-lilamrta.

This ensemble features parrots, flowers and pomegranates, reflecting the scene from the verse. The intricate costumes are the result of a collaborative effort between a trained jewellery designer and her husband, who have incorporated various embroidery techniques such as cutwork jali, resham embroidery, poth and kardana work, and gota patti.

At Juhu, the deities will wear costumes crafted by designer Arun Wadhwani. The Girgaon temple has planned two-day celebrations on September 3 and 4, beginning with Mangal-arati at 5 am and concluding with Maha-arati at midnight. Other Krishna temples have also announced their schedules for Janmashtami, with various cultural and religious programs planned over the weekends to accommodate devotees who cannot leave work to attend the festivities.
