IUML State president says women’s safety concerns might have prompted Kanthapuram’s remarks

IUML Keralam president Syed Sadikali Shihab Thangal has downplayed the controversy surrounding All India Jamiyyathul Ulama general secretary Kanthapuram A.P. Aboobacker Musliar's comments on women's participation in public religious events. Thangal stated that Musliar's remarks might have been influenced by safety concerns for women rather than a desire to limit their rights.

He suggested that Musliar's call for restrictions could be interpreted as an appeal for greater social control, aiming to maintain discipline in society. Thangal refrained from criticizing Musliar's stance and emphasized that the Muslim League would support what it deemed beneficial to society. The issue gained prominence after a circular from the Samastha Kerala Jamiyyathul Ulama, led by Musliar, urged mahal and madrasa committees and religious institutions to exclude women from public celebrations, especially when men were present.

Musliar later defended the position at a meeting in Kochi, stating that women should remain indoors and defended the practice of purdah as a way to prevent social issues. Critics, including political leaders and civil society members, condemned the remarks as attempts to restrict women's presence in public spaces. Thangal, however, framed the issue around safety, social responsibility, and the necessity of limits in public life.

He also highlighted the Muslim League's overarching goal of promoting social and community unity. Thangal's remarks helped the IUML sidestep a direct confrontation with Musliar and signaled that the party would prioritize societal benefit. This strategy may enable the IUML to manage the controversy while preserving its traditional religious support base.
