‘It was a lie’: Feroz Khan’s doctored sick note in the spotlight at Madlanga commission

Suspended deputy head of Crime Intelligence Feroz Khan may face an independent medical examination before the Madlanga commission extends his testimony delay further, according to proceedings at the commission on Tuesday, 1 September 2026. Khan was to appear at the Brigitte Mabandla Justice College in Pretoria but his appearance was postponed due to being shot on 28 June in Houghton, Johannesburg.

Khan had been treated at Milpark Hospital and discharged in mid-July. The commission chairperson, Mbuyiseli Madlanga, questioned Khan's lawyer, Muhammed Vally, about Khan's consent to an independent medical examination. Vally noted that while they were not opposed, they were concerned about the impact on Khan's condition. The independent doctor would need to consult Khan's treating doctor to prevent further complications.

The commission's evidence leader, Adila Hassim, challenged the idea of medical privacy preventing the commission from determining Khan's ability to testify. She argued that while the commission needed enough information to justify his absence, the public interest outweighed his privacy. Hassim also pointed out that Khan has not submitted his statement due on 22 June.

Madlanga stressed the limited time remaining for the commission's public hearings, scheduled to end on 2 October, and questioned the feasibility of testing Khan's reasons for absence. The commission also heard about a medical certificate issued to Khan, which changed from 30 June to 27 June, with an added diagnosis of "extreme stress, depression, and anxiety."

The alteration was allegedly made by Khan's son, according to the affidavit by Khan's treating doctor.
