Iran war: US, Tehran trade fire in new flare-up

On Tuesday, the United States and Iran engaged in a series of retaliatory strikes, signaling a potential escalation in the ongoing conflict. Iranian media reported multiple strikes near Bandar Abbas, on the strategic Strait of Hormuz, with local officials confirming a strike that killed four individuals, including a child at a wedding in Sirik.

In response, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei claimed Iran had valuable lessons to teach its American adversaries. Earlier, US Central Command announced that its forces had targeted sites operated by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). These strikes followed recent IRGC attempts to place sea mines in the Strait of Hormuz and attacks on US service members in the region.

US President Donald Trump characterized the strikes as a strong retaliation for Iran's failed efforts to deploy sea mines and shoot eight successful missiles at a US military base in Jordan. He threatened further, more severe consequences if Iran retaliates against this "very justified" attack. Trump also warned of a massive forthcoming assault, stating that Iran would be left in ruins if the conflict continued.

Following the strikes, the semi-official news agency Mehr reported that the IRGC had launched a regrettable response, releasing footage of ballistic missiles being launched towards US military positions in Jordan. However, Centcom did not confirm the allegation of an attack at a wedding. The recent escalation comes after weeks of a fragile ceasefire, during which the US and Iran engaged in sporadic talks about reopening the Strait of Hormuz.

In contrast, the US had been primarily focused on tightening economic sanctions against Iran, with more sanctions likely to follow.
