Iran president Pezeshkian praises Putin’s support, says Russia and Tehran can resist US ‘unilateralism’

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian recently praised Russian President Vladimir Putin for Moscow's support during Iran's war and US sanctions. He expressed gratitude for Putin's positions during both the conflict and under sanctions, both at the United Nations and international forums. Pezeshkian stated that Iran and Russia could collaborate to resist what he called US "unilateralism," describing their relationship as strategic.

Putin echoed Pezeshkian's sentiments, expressing solidarity with Iran and pledging continued support against US unilateralism and sanctions.

The meeting between the two leaders took place during the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, following renewed exchanges of fire between Iran and the United States. Pezeshkian emphasized that Iran would reciprocate if the US returned to its commitments under a June memorandum aimed at ending the conflict. However, the June framework has not been upheld, leading to ongoing diplomatic tensions between the two nations.

The SCO summit provided a platform for Russia, Iran, and China to strengthen their ties as they navigate Western sanctions and pursue a multipolar international order. Pezeshkian and Putin's meeting highlights the growing cooperation between the two heavily sanctioned countries, despite the military and political tensions.
