Trump warned Iran that they would face even harsher and more extensive retaliation if they responded to these justified attacks. He emphasized that this would not be the largest attack ever - a far more devastating assault awaited Iran if they went too far. Military officials reported that the strikes began at 12 PM Eastern Time (7:30 PM local Tehran time).

They targeted Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps facilities inside Iran in response to their recent attacks on maritime shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and US personnel stationed in the region. Axios reports these strikes were part of a plan President Trump and his top advisors considered recently. The plan involved limited strikes in the Strait of Hormuz aimed at preventing Iran from rebuilding its radar and missile capabilities to attack ships again.

This plan was reportedly drafted in the previous week by US Central Command (Centcom). The idea was to reduce the risk of Iranian attacks on US oil tankers, ships, and military aircraft. Just a few days prior, on Sunday night, the first joint military action between Iran and the US since late July occurred. US forces targeted Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps units attempting to lay mines in the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran responded by firing rockets at US military bases in Jordan, which US officials said were successfully intercepted.
