INVESTIGATION: Oil companies violate Nigerian laws, flare gas, face no sanctions (1)

Nigeria has tightened laws against gas flaring in oil-producing communities, but a PREMIUM TIMES investigation reveals weak enforcement and rising methane emissions. For decades, residents have lived with the orange glow of gas flares, like Rose Ordu, whose crops have withered due to the heat. Despite the government's promises to end the practice, gas flaring continues, releasing pollutants that contribute to climate change.

The Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) and subsequent regulations were intended to address this issue, but a PREMIUM TIMES investigation found that enforcement remains weak. Many oil companies have not complied with the regulations, and flare volumes have risen in several oil assets. Communities close to these facilities have reported health issues, such as eye irritation and chest pain, but there is no evidence of sanctions for non-compliance.
