Indonesia Agriculture Minister Dismisses 27 Officials Over Gambling, Fund Irregularities

Indonesia's Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman dismissed 27 officials from the Ministry of Agriculture in August 2024 over a range of issues, including budget irregularities and alleged participation in online gambling. Sulaiman, seen as a mentor to the dismissed officials, aimed to guide them toward becoming good public servants and exemplary civil servants. Of the 27, 13 were permanently dismissed for online gambling involvement after verification and investigation processes.

Sulaiman clarified that the dismissed officials occupied echelon positions within the ministry, though the exact levels were not specified. He emphasized that online gambling is unacceptable for civil servants as it contradicts values of discipline, public service responsibility, and setting a good example in their roles. Some of the dismissed officials had received warnings previously, but their violations persisted, leading to permanent dismissal.

The dismissed officials faced sanctions for amounts of nearly IDR 200 million in online gambling deposits. Sulaiman stated that these dismissals would not impact the ministry's performance, given its workforce of around 52,000 employees. Another 14 officials were dismissed due to alleged irregularities involving the use of funds totaling billions of rupiah. These dismissals occurred on August 18 and are under investigation by the Ministry's Inspectorate General.

Sulaiman explained that the removals were temporary measures to ensure a fair and transparent investigation process, providing certainty based on evidence and applicable regulations. If financial losses to the state are found, the case will be referred to law enforcement authorities. However, officials found not to have committed violations would be reinstated and given career development opportunities based on performance and bureaucratic principles of objectivity.

Sulaiman affirmed that efforts to clean up the bureaucracy would continue, as the government aims to build a Ministry of Agriculture that is professional, possesses integrity, and is oriented towards public service.
