Hormuz will be bypassed in 2 years: Bessent

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated on Tuesday that the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway for Persian Gulf oil, will be bypassed by oil pipelines in two years. This will render the strait practically useless. Bessent made these remarks during a fireside chat with Larry Kudlow at a global finance summit in Asheville, North Carolina.

The Treasury Department has been playing a more significant role in the ongoing conflict. In recent weeks, Bessent announced plans to tighten sanctions on financial institutions and other entities continuing to engage with Iran. Last week, the US targeted UAE branches of Egypt's Banque Misr, the second-largest bank, but Bessent clarified that they avoided sanctioning the main bank itself to prevent reverting to Egyptian control.

Bessent explained that the US did not sanction the Egyptian parent bank because it did not wish to revert to Egyptian control. He also revealed that the Treasury expects to sanction another bank this week and another one next week. The US is now exploring the possibility of targeting aircraft leasing firms as part of its strategy to economically isolate Iran.

China, which imports over 90% of Iranian oil and has thus far ignored calls to cut off financial ties with the Islamic Republic, has not been directly targeted by the US. Bessent defended the US's current approach, stating that sanctions combined with a blockade are effective. He said, "We are burying the head of the Iranian snake. The snake doesn't know it's dead yet, but it will stop wiggling when the sun goes down."
