Grand Canyon flooding shuts down tourist lodging, threatens economy after last year’s fire

The park remains open, but visitors who had planned overnight stays, many traveling from afar for reservations made a year or longer ago, have scrambled to find alternative accommodations. Hundreds of rooms are now vacant due to insufficient water, disrupting plans for thousands of tourists set to arrive in the days ahead. Michelle Allen, from Olathe, Kansas, received notice on Sunday evening that she would need to check out the following morning after just one night of a five-night stay.

"We had to hurry up and make accommodations somewhere else," Allen said, "luckily we were able to do that." The uncertainty surrounding the duration of the closure remains, with experts warning that the economic impact could extend beyond northern Arizona, affecting southern Nevada as well. Christine Vogt, a consultant on sustainable tourism and outdoor recreation in the Western U.S., described the situation as "catastrophic," while also noting that the water shut-off could persist for weeks.

Megha Budruk, an Arizona State University associate professor specializing in communities near public lands, cautioned that an extended lodging shutdown could impact hundreds of service jobs in and around the national park and result in hundreds of thousands of dollars in local revenue loss.
