Germany Says Russia Responsible for Drone Attack, Announces Retaliation

Germany has concluded that Russia is responsible for a failed bomb attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport and announced a series of retaliatory measures. The attack took place on August 4th, and Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt stated that the country is facing daily targeting through hybrid warfare. Germany will close Russia's general consulate in Bonn from September 18th, terminate the agreement covering the Russian House in Berlin, add more individuals to EU sanctions lists, tighten entry checks for Russian nationals, and increase pressure on Russia's "shadow fleet."

The intelligence domain will also see further steps taken. German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul summoned the Russian ambassador to brief him on the measures. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stated that Russia's response would mirror Germany's, accusing Berlin of involvement in terrorist attacks against Russian citizens and sponsoring terrorism.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte welcomed Germany's response, stating that the evidence was clear. Federal prosecutors believe Russia has repeatedly relied on cheaply hired operatives to carry out sabotage or lay groundwork for attacks in Germany, often aiming to undermine German support for Ukraine. Germany, facing heightened risk from hybrid attacks from Russia, is Ukraine's most important financial backer, but the attack could impact campaigning in eastern Germany, where skepticism toward supporting Ukraine runs high.
