Gasspeicher: Wadephul setzt auf Algerien als Partner für Gaslieferungen

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul advocates Algerian gas as a long-term solution for replenishing Germany's gas reserves. "Diversification is absolutely the hour's call," the CDU politician declared near his visit to Algeria where he briefed journalists in Algiers. Algeria is a dependable partner already shipping significant amounts of gas to Italy and Spain, according to Wadephul.

The minister met with Algeria's Minister of Hydrocarbons, Mohamed Arkab, early in the morning to discuss securing long-term contracts with Germany. Plans were also set in motion for an exchange of views with German companies' representatives in Algiers. Wadephul described Algeria among the most important gas suppliers for the EU and a future supplier with vast potential for producing green hydrogen.

The country's importance is set to increase further as a future supplier. Germany and Algeria only recently agreed to deepen their partnership for energy supply in July. The economy ministry recently stated that a gas shortage in the coming winter was not expected, but the situation is more strained than in the past two winters.

Germany's storage levels currently stand lower than in previous years. At the end of his two-day visit to Tunisia and Algeria, Wadephul planned to meet Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to discuss matters on a political level, a special honor for a foreign minister.
