French tennis star Fils bemoans lack of energy in US Open first round flop

NEW YORK — Jessica Pegula and Coco Gauff have been doubles partners on the tennis circuit, but the latter seems to have grown weary of facing the former this summer. Gauff recently triumphed over Pegula in the Cincinnati Open final, dominating with a 5-0 lead in the match. Since last year's U.S. Open, Gauff has won four out of the past five matches against Pegula, with a head-to-head record of 5-5.

This summer, Gauff will return to the U.S. Open, where she made strides in perfecting her serve and forehand at Arthur Ashe Stadium. Jessica Pegula, a close confidante to Gauff, believes the 22-year-old two-time Grand Slam champion will be at her best this time around. Since Wimbledon, Gauff has won nine of her 10 matches on hard courts in the United States and Canada, with just two going to a third set.

Despite her success, Gauff still works on improving her legs and lungs. She has achieved success in recent tournaments, including the Cincinnati Open, where she won her second title in four years, and the most-watched women's tour match in Tennis Channel history.
