Flood response could take months as death toll climbs

Efforts to deliver urgent aid to Nepal's flood-affected north may persist for months, with the death toll surpassing 1,000 and dozens of Australians still unaccounted for. A glacier collapse, which occurred at the border with China on August 26, caused a devastating flood and mudslide. Nepali and Chinese authorities have confirmed over 1,000 deaths, while another 4,400 people remain missing, including more than 840 foreign nationals.

The number of Australians missing has dwindled to 42, following contact with a person in Tibet, who is receiving support from consular officers and has communicated with family members. Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong expressed relief for those who have been found safe, such as trekker Cara Severino and 26-year-old Australian Michael Keats, whose partner and son are raising funds for a spiritual trip to India in his memory.

DFAT claims to have no official confirmation of Australian deaths in the region. Over 1,000 aid packages have been delivered to the affected districts, but survivors are still stranded in remote locations like cowsheds, jungles, and high grounds. The rescue operation, hindered by difficult terrain, constant rain, and the ongoing flood risk, is anticipated to last for at least three months.

An Australian Air Force C-17A aircraft recently transported aid supplies to the devastated areas, and an 18-person response team has been dispatched. Rescue teams near the Tibetan Plateau are urgently searching for survivors amid the rubble, with mass burials commencing. Approximately 600 people remain trapped in hydropower stations, which have become focal points for rescue efforts.

The Australians missing include members of the Iyer family and several other individuals, such as Sydney IT worker Gopi Krishna Naidu Agastya, Royal Australian Air Force member Karan Bhardwaj, Sydney woman Sumi Adhikari, and Sunshine Coast woman Renee Spry.
