Epomaker GX1 review: This $50 gaming headset has no business being this good

The Epomaker GX1 is one of the most impressive gaming headsets available for just $50. It has very few downsides compared to more expensive options. Upon first use, I expected subpar sound and microphone quality, as well as discomfort from extended wear. However, after a couple of weeks of regular use, including gaming and Discord sessions, I have grown to appreciate the headset daily.

Though it has minor issues, such as its software and virtual 7.1 mode, the majority of features work well. It supports 2.4GHz, Bluetooth, and wired connections, with compatibility across PC, PS4, PS5, Mac, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox Series consoles (requiring a wired connection for Xbox). The headset features a solid build with sturdy metal sections, a robust headband, and secure fit.

The RGB lighting is modest and doesn't distract, while comfort improves with extended wear. The 320-gram weight is balanced, and the earpads provide comfort even during long hours of use.

The headset delivers clear and distinct positional audio, which is valuable for gaming and Discord. The open-back design slightly enhances spatial awareness but isn't on par with high-end headphones. The latency of 25ms is negligible for gaming, and there are no interruptions or distortions. While the bass could be stronger, it remains controlled and impactful.

Vocals are clear, and the overall tuning is balanced. Volume levels are comfortable, with no significant distortion until nearing maximum output. The headset also maintains some awareness of the surrounding environment, making it suitable for shared spaces.

Epomaker's microphone stands out as a highlight, featuring two distinct microphones. The detachable boom mic automatically switches to a built-in mic.
