Carney’s Liberals win 3 special elections in Canada amid trade clash with US

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney's Liberal Party emerged victorious in three special elections on Monday, increasing the leader's parliamentary majority amid a trade dispute with the United States. The Liberal Party won the district of Chicoutimi-Le Fjord in Quebec, as well as two other districts in Ontario and British Columbia.

Carney praised the voters for "placing their trust" in the government during this critical period for Canada. He noted that Canada is facing a changing world, and Canadians are up for the challenge. Tensions between the United States and Canada have risen after trade talks fell apart last month, with Carney alleging that US negotiators sought to impose restrictions on Canada's trade deals with other countries.

He also claimed that the US made unacceptable threats to French language and Quebec culture. Despite the risks posed by escalating the trade war, which heavily impacts Canada's export-dependent economy, Carney enjoys broad public support. A recent poll found that 76% of Canadians endorsed Carney's approach towards Washington. While Carney may lack his flamboyant predecessor's charisma, he has successfully inspired a patriotic sentiment among Canadians frustrated by American attacks.

Carney's rise to power came in response to trade tensions with the US, following former President Trump's second term. He was appointed leader of his party and the government in March 2025 and won a general election a month later, surprising many. The Liberals secured the most seats but fell short of a majority. A by-election in April allowed the party to gain the parliamentary majority required to implement an economic agenda aimed at reducing dependence on the United States.

Additional special elections are planned in the coming months, but polls indicate no immediate threat to Carney's majority.
