Carney’s Liberals sweep 3 special elections in Canada as voters back his stand against Trump

Canada's Liberal Party secured victories in three special elections held on Monday, indicating voter support for Prime Minister Mark Carney's stance against U.S. President Donald Trump. The Canadian Press projected Liberal wins in Chicoutimi-Le Fjord, Quebec, Beaches-East York, Toronto, and North Vancouver-Capilano, British Columbia.

Carney expressed this as an endorsement of his government's approach, stating that voters have placed their trust in their leadership during a critical period for Canada. The most notable shift came in Quebec, where Liberal Daniel Gobeil won a district held by the opposition Conservatives since 2018. Carney's victory in this region is seen as a means to preserve Canadian unity across the country.

In British Columbia, Carney's former deputy chief of staff, Braeden Caley, won the North Vancouver-Capilano seat. Liberal lawmaker Hedy Fry commented on the U.S. message sent, stating that Carney's leadership has gained the support of the Canadian people. The U.S.-Canada trade talks ended on August 21 after failing to reach an agreement, with Trump imposing 50% tariffs on approximately $20 billion worth of Canadian goods.

Canada responded by planning tariffs on U.S. products. Trump's response to the trade dispute included renaming Lake Ontario as "Lake America" and U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent expressed that Canada had limited leverage in the dispute due to the U.S. economy being roughly 13 times larger.
