Carney says U.S. wants to wipe out Canadian industries or make them subsidiaries

Prime Minister Mark Carney criticized U.S. negotiators during trade talks, asserting their intention to either dismantle or absorb key Canadian industries, such as the automotive sector, or eliminate them entirely. This stance emerged as Carney addressed journalists prior to entering the prime minister's office following the Liberal party's success in three byelections held on Monday.

Carney stated that the talks had previously achieved mutually beneficial outcomes before they were abruptly halted last month. He contends that the U.S. demanded excessive concessions that would compromise the auto industry and jeopardize Canada's sovereignty by limiting access to other trade agreements. Carney expressed willingness to resume negotiations with the Americans only when they cease engaging in trivial or unserious discussions, such as "memes."

Canada has imposed counter-tariffs on approximately $28 billion worth of U.S. goods, with these duties set to commence on September 8.
