Birth, death registration are mandatory – Deputy Registrar tells Ghanaians

The Births and Deaths Registry in Ghana has emphasized that registering births and deaths is mandatory and integral to every citizen's journey from arrival to departure. Seth Kissi Bosompem, the Deputy Registrar, addressed Ghanaians on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, urging parents and families to notify the government of both births and deaths promptly, providing the necessary information for official documentation.

Birth registration should follow the naming ceremony, after which details of the child must be submitted to the Registry. Bosompem clarified that death registration is equally crucial and should not be overlooked during funeral preparations. Families often concentrate on cooking, decorations, and burial ceremonies, forgetting the legal obligation to register the death.

He urged families to view death registration as part of funeral planning and ensure the deceased is registered before burial, rather than waiting after the funeral. Accurate information on the cause of death is vital for public health and disease surveillance, as it helps authorities identify potential health threats and take preventive measures.

Bosompem encouraged Ghanaians to treat both birth and death registration as essential civic responsibilities, ensuring these processes are completed promptly.
