‘Because we had her on our first try’: Couple explains daughter’s ‘Toto’ nickname to PM Wong

In an intimate meeting at Prime Minister Lawrence Wong's residence, Hubert Ng and Yih Ru, the couple behind the TikTok account "Bert & Lulu," introduced their daughter, Toto. Four years ago, Wong first encountered the young couple when Toto was yet to be born. As Wong met the toddler, he asked about her unique name, "Toto." Her father, Bert, explained that they named her "Toto" because they conceived her on their first try, expressing their gratitude for luck in their parenting journey.

A video of the meeting features the couple laughing as they recount their experience and Wong's amusement at seeing young people thriving in their parenthood journey. Wong emphasized the importance of encouraging young Singaporeans to start their own parenting journey, encouraging fathers to be actively involved like Bert. Despite the challenges of modern parenting, such as schooling and enrichment, Toto, at just one year old, is already participating in enrichment classes that she enjoys, particularly swimming.

Unlike other toddlers, Toto does not attend infant care as her father, Bert, works from home, allowing him and his wife, Lulu, to have more time together. The couple expressed their appreciation for Singapore's shared parental leave policy, which has been beneficial for their family. Bert & Lulu thanked Wong for his visit, describing the encounter as surreal, noting that Toto had even managed to sit through the entire conversation.
