A team of 44 South Korean emergency responders will be dispatched to Nepal, the government said Friday, as the country struggles with a devastating earthquake that has left thousands dead and injured. The team, which will depart Saturday, will include rescue workers, doctors and relief supplies, the Ministry of Interior and Safety said. The decision to send the team was made during an emergency meeting of government officials, who assessed the situation in Nepal following the 6.4-magnitude earthquake that struck late Wednesday. The team will work with Nepalese authorities and a rapid response team from the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, the ministry said. The South Korean team will focus on searching for survivors, treating the injured and providing relief supplies, it said. The government also said it will provide $2 million in humanitarian aid to Nepal. A 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck western Nepal late Wednesday, killing at least 4,989 people and injuring over 9,000, according to local media reports.
