Bandra Hit-And-Run Case: SUV Driver Megha Rawal Sent To Judicial Custody After Family Confrontation Outside Court

Mumbai witnessed a tense encounter outside a court on Tuesday, as the family of an eight-year-old boy, Ansh Gupta, confronted the woman accused of a hit-and-run incident that claimed his life. Megha Rawal, a 45-year-old nutritionist and entrepreneur, was escorted to a police vehicle by police personnel, shielded from the distraught family who charged at her and banged on the vehicle's windows.

Rawal, who was initially granted 14 days of judicial custody, faced opposition from the family seeking justice and allegations of her rash driving. Magistrate ET Ingale of the 12th Court at Bandra denied the police's request to extend her custody, as investigators found no additional evidence during her one-day remand. The case will be heard on Wednesday by the Dindoshi Sessions Court.

Rawal's family, comprising her father Rajendra Gupta, 47, his wife, and other relatives, appeared before the magistrate to demand accountability and sought to establish that her reckless driving led to their son's death. The police moved her SUV from outside the station, fearing an angry mob could damage it.

Rawal's defense team, lawyers Ankita Singh and Bhavya Shah of A&P Partners, challenged the police claims, stating that there were no call records or CDR entries that indicated she was on a call while driving or during the accident. They also argued that there were no grounds to invoke Section 105, which pertains to the search of a vehicle after an accused is arrested.

Police inspector Sachin Rane acknowledged that the CCTV footage was grainy and did not confirm phone use, further complicating the prosecution's case. Her lawyers pointed out that she only called her husband after learning that her vehicle had struck the child, and her phone was surrendered for forensic examination and CDR analysis. Investigators also recorded the statement of eyewitness Shiva Sameer Sigdar, a milk seller on Mount Mary Road.

Despite the family's allegations and opposition to extending Rawal's custody, the court deemed there were no objectionable information while examining potential disputes among Rawal, the complainant, and their relatives.
