Apple joins Google in renaming Lake Ontario to "Lake America"

Apple has recently updated the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America on its Maps application, according to recent reports. This move is part of a broader trend among major digital map providers, with Google following suit a few days prior. The change is said to be in response to an executive order issued by President Trump last week, who directed Apple to rename the lake.

Canadian users of Apple Maps will still see Lake Ontario if their location settings are set to Canada, while international users will see the renamed lake. Apple has not commented on the decision, but the company did rename other landmarks, such as the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America and Mount Denali to Mount McKinley, under similar presidential directives during Trump's first term.

Google's decision to rename the lake is based on updates to the U.S. Geographic Names Information System, which they follow to reflect official government name changes. Despite Trump's executive order, Canadian officials have stated they will not recognize the name change. Meanwhile, MapQuest, another U.S. map provider, has opted not to update the lake's name on its platform.
