APC, thermal radar deployed to beef up Kelantan border security

Rantau Panjang: The Malaysian military has deployed an armoured personnel carrier (APC) and a thermal radar (STR) to bolster security along the border with Thailand, following a surge of violent incidents in southern Thailand last month. Senior Assistant Commissioner Ahmad Radzi Hussain, commander of the General Operations Force Southeast Brigade, revealed the deployment took effect on August 26 as part of Operation Taring Wawasan Kelantan (OTWK).

The APC and STR were dispatched to enhance patrols and surveillance along the Golok River, a key part of the Malaysia-Thailand border. The APC will be stationed in the Jeram Perdah and Rantau Panjang sectors, while the STR operates in the Pengkalan Kubor sector. The purpose is to bolster security presence and monitor areas susceptible to cross-border movement, landing, and smuggling activities.

The APC offers stronger patrol capabilities, while the STR enhances surveillance via radar and thermal infrared technology. These additions complement existing ground patrols and are part of a preventive strategy to deter smuggling, incursions, and other cross-border crimes. Despite no arrests or seizures directly linked to the APC and STR deployment, their presence has heightened deterrence and preparedness.

The GOF personnel continued their surveillance along the border using the two vehicles today, covering areas along the Golok River, particularly hotspots linked to livestock smuggling and other contraband. On August 23, a total of 51 incidents, including attacks involving improvised explosive devices (IEDs), were reported across Thailand's southern border provinces.
