Anthropic just made a staggering $35 billion bet on Claude — here's why it needs so much computing power

Anthropic has reportedly committed a staggering $35 billion to access infrastructure at a massive new data center in Texas, backed by Nvidia, for its AI chatbot Claude. The $35 billion deal comes just a week after Anthropic reportedly committed another $45 billion to rent computing power from Nscale. Anthropic needs this massive infrastructure to support the growing demand for Claude.

Claude requires a significant amount of computing power as each user prompt triggers processing by specialized hardware inside a data center. Anthropic's growing revenue and increasing demand for Claude, particularly through its coding agent Claude Code, necessitate such extensive infrastructure. Claude's annualized revenue has surpassed $47 billion, up from $9 billion at the end of 2025, with business subscriptions to Claude Code quadrupling in the same period.

The company expects to use Nvidia's upcoming Vera Rubin chips in the Texas data center, which will contain Nvidia hardware and for which Anthropic and Nvidia have a broader strategic partnership. This infrastructure bet is long-term, as Anthropic believes Claude usage, particularly through products like Claude Code and future AI agents, will continue to grow significantly.
