Alleged $14.86m fraud: EFCC summons Sylva

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has summoned former Bayelsa State Governor, Timipre Sylva, to question him regarding an alleged fraud of $14.86 million. EFCC spokesman Dele Oyewale informed the public of Sylva's request for an audience with the commission, following the governor's allegations against the anti-graft agency.

In his resignation letter from the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Monday, Sylva claimed that the EFCC had operated as an organ of the party rather than as an independent institution. He had previously informed the EFCC about the letter, accusing the commission of acting as a political tool. Sylva also criticized the APC for abandoning its founding principles and disappointing Nigerians, stating that he could no longer support a party whose leaders prioritize "fair play" in politics.

However, Oyewale responded to Sylva's accusations, stating that the former governor had been declared wanted and must appear before the commission. The EFCC had previously declared Sylva wanted in connection with a conspiracy and dishonest conversion case involving $14,859,257. According to reports, investigators have identified Sylva as a principal financier of the alleged plot, accusing him of contributing N785m through Purple Waves Limited, an Abuja-based company.
