Akufo-Addo mourns late Ya-Na at Gbewaa Palace

Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo paid tribute to the late Overlord of Dagbon, Ndan Ya-Na Abukari Mahama II, during a somber visit to Gbewaa Palace in Yendi on Saturday. The former President joined the chiefs and people of Dagbon to mourn the late ruler, who passed away some months ago. Nana Akufo-Addo expressed his condolences to the Regent, chiefs, and people of Dagbon, noting that the late Ya-Na's reign had brought lasting peace to the region after years of chieftaincy disputes.

He recalled their close relationship, having worked together following the late Ya-Na's historic enskinment in 2019. The former President, who was abroad when news of the Ya-Na's death reached him, arranged for customary greetings to be presented on his behalf. Nana Akufo-Addo emphasized the special bond they shared, including the late Ya-Na's recognition of his contribution by conferring the title 'Naa Abudani' after his installation.

He praised the late Ya-Na for his successful reign, which saw tremendous peace and rapid development in Dagbon. The former President also commended the Regent and senior traditional leaders for upholding the peace agreement, which establishes a rotational system for selecting successors. He prayed for the late Ya-Na's peaceful repose and extended his strength to the people of Dagbon during the mourning period.

The Regent of Dagbon, Kampakuya Naa Yakubu Abukari, thanked Nana Akufo-Addo for his visit, acknowledging his role in promoting Dagbamba individuals to significant positions and providing opportunities for Dagbon people to serve at the highest levels of the country.
