AI, working parents, growth markets: New Minister of State Foo Cexiang on his priorities

Singapore's new Minister of State Foo Cexiang has outlined his key priorities for his roles in the Manpower and Trade and Industry Ministries. A central focus is helping businesses adopt artificial intelligence (AI) without compromising workers' development, as well as finding ways to support working parents.

Mr Foo emphasizes the importance of integrating AI into the workforce in a way that preserves opportunities for workers to learn, develop and progress in their careers. He plans to collaborate closely with the human resources sector to determine which tasks can be delegated to AI, while preserving space for employees to gain experience and grow their capabilities.

The Minister also aims to create workplace flexibility arrangements that accommodate both employees' needs and employers' operational requirements, particularly in supporting working parents. As a father of three, he is familiar with the challenges of balancing career and family responsibilities.

In his role at the Trade and Industry Ministry, Foo sees potential for Singapore to maintain its central position in global trade while exploring opportunities in emerging markets, such as Europe, Africa, Latin America and Central Asia. These markets are projected to experience significant growth in the coming decades due to their young and expanding populations.

Beyond individual policy areas, Foo believes his contribution lies in fostering collaboration between the government and the private sector, HR leaders, and workers. He hopes Singaporeans will see him as a minister who actively engages with people and ideas to create tangible benefits, such as more job opportunities for fellow Singaporeans.
