AI Can Replace Only Lazy Lawyers – Justice Asante

Justice Edward Amoako Asante, a nominee for the Supreme Court, has stated that artificial intelligence (AI) will not replace diligent lawyers, but could potentially make "lazy lawyers" obsolete. During his appearance before the Appointments Committee of Parliament, Justice Asante advocated for the integration of AI into the legal system, highlighting its potential to enhance efficiency, improve legal research, and expedite case resolution.

Asked about the impact of AI on the legal profession, the judge expressed enthusiastic support for its adoption, noting that AI is becoming increasingly common worldwide. He emphasized that AI could significantly benefit legal research, case management, and the processing of information, ultimately reducing delays and improving the overall efficiency of the judiciary.

Justice Asante further explained that his experience at the ECOWAS Court of Justice had exposed him to the growing use of AI and related technologies. He mentioned that both judges and staff at the regional court had undergone training in AI usage, and the technology is already being utilized in their work. According to him, AI should be embraced as an inevitable development, and the Chief Justice should decide on implementing it in the country's judicial system.

The judge acknowledged that AI could enable lawyers and judicial officers to conduct research more quickly and assist in case processing and management, ultimately leading to faster resolution of cases. However, Justice Asante cautioned against viewing AI as a replacement for human expertise, particularly in the legal field. He argued that lawyers who continue to develop their skills will remain relevant and urged the legal profession and judiciary to learn to harness AI's capabilities to complement human judgment and improve justice delivery.
