Afenyo-Markin denies exisitence of audio, video linking him to extortion

Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has dismissed reports alleging the existence of audio or video recordings linking him to alleged acts of extortion, describing the claims as social media speculation. Speaking to journalists during a visit by cultural troupes from Winneba to his Accra residence, Afenyo-Markin affirmed that he has conducted himself with dignity and responsibility in his duties as Minority Leader.

He emphasized his awareness of the responsibilities attached to the position and his commitment to not engage in actions that could tarnish the reputation of the office, his family, or the New Patriotic Party. While acknowledging he is not perfect, Afenyo-Markin vowed not to be reckless in his parliamentary responsibilities. The Minority Leader firmly denied the existence of any incriminating evidence, stating that the allegations were unfounded and that no such videos or audios of him engaging in improper conduct exist.

He assured that no audio recording of him engaged in any embarrassing behavior exists. Afenyo-Markin acknowledged the prevalence of claims and allegations on social media but maintained his focus on his duties. He also expressed confidence that legal steps taken against allegations made against him would establish the facts and resolve the matter.

The Minority Leader highlighted his concerns over reported losses associated with the Bank of Ghana’s Domestic Gold Purchase Programme and GoldBod, calling for serious parliamentary and public scrutiny of the transactions, including pricing, commissions, bonuses, and off-taker arrangements. Afenyo-Markin urged authorities to focus on the financial aspects of the issue, arguing that such scrutiny is necessary to safeguard exchange-rate stability and prevent potential losses from further harming the economy.

He stressed that the focus should remain on issues affecting the public purse and the economic well-being of Ghanaians, steering clear of personal attacks and political exchanges.
