A-Plus calls for IGP intervention after New Winneba clash, urges calm

Former Gomoa Central Member of Parliament, Kwame Asare Obeng, widely known as A-Plus, has urged the Inspector-General of Police to step in following the violent clashes in New Winneba that resulted in the deaths of three individuals and left around 15 others wounded. Expressing his outrage, A-Plus stated that he has taken preliminary steps to resolve the land dispute, including petitioning the Lands Commission and the Interior Minister.

He alleged that a small group of individuals have taken over lands and are operating as landguards, leading to tensions among communities. A-Plus further claimed that residents, who were reportedly unarmed during the demonstration, were allegedly fired upon by the police. He called for a thorough investigation by the IGP into the circumstances of the violence and accused some police officers of possibly profiting from the land disputes.

The MP maintains that the dispute is not between the Effutu and Gomoa people, but rather involves a few individuals who have unlawfully taken over lands in New Winneba. He urged the authorities to protect residents and ensure justice is served. The Ghana Police Service has reported that the violent disturbances in New Winneba have been brought under control after a mob of around 300 people attacked residents and vandalized property.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, when the group, allegedly armed with guns and other weapons, stormed the township. Three people were killed and around 15 injured during the clashes.
