2027 ELECTIONS AND UNGUARDED STATEMENTS

As preparations for the 2027 Nigerian general elections intensify, the political landscape is becoming increasingly volatile. Some politicians are engaging in inflammatory and threatening rhetoric that is alarming and threatens democratic principles. Statements suggesting punishment or intimidation for citizens who do not support a particular political party are deeply concerning.

If left unchecked, such language could create an intimidating atmosphere around the election, where every Nigerian should be able to vote freely without fear.

The statement made by Samuel Danjuma Shekwolo, Chairman of Kuje Area Council in the Federal Capital Territory, has drawn significant attention. In a video that went viral, he allegedly told residents that they should support the All Progressives Congress (APC) or leave the area council. He claimed this was linked to development projects and government influence.

Although Shekwolo later denied his intent to threaten residents, this incident alone should not be dismissed. Similarly, Borno State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Sainna Buba, has sparked controversy with his comments. He reportedly warned that those who oppose the APC would be flogged, and opponents could face physical harm. Such threats from a serving government official are unacceptable in a democratic society.

These disturbing incidents have already prompted condemnation and calls for an investigation. They must be considered alongside other incidents, such as Senator Francis Fadahunsi's comments ahead of the Osun governorship election. Although Fadahunsi denied advocating violence, his remarks were deemed as potentially inciting conflict. The Osun State Police Command has since investigated the matter.

The National Peace Committee's efforts to prevent violence and promote issue-based campaigns ahead of the 2027 elections are crucial. However, the responsibility to maintain peace and credibility during the electoral process should not solely rest on the committee. Political leaders must uphold responsible conduct and ensure that any threats or inflammatory statements are investigated promptly and impartially.

Government officials should understand their immense influence and refrain from using their positions to threaten or intimidate citizens. Election should not be a do or die affair; it is an opportunity for citizens to exercise their democratic rights to choose their representatives freely.
