Woman shot by US police after 2 people stabbed in New York’s Times Square

On Monday, a woman wielding two large knives stabbed two individuals in New York's Times Square, according to an official and bystander video footage. The incident occurred adjacent to a New York Police Department substation, located just outside One Times Square, a bustling and highly frequented tourist attraction.

The woman's condition following the shooting was not immediately disclosed by authorities, who were organizing a news briefing. Videos circulating on social media depicted a group of approximately ten officers surrounding the assailant, who was holding the knives. One officer attempted to subdue her with a Taser, but the device proved ineffective in incapacitating her.

The woman then approached the officers swiftly, waving the knives in the air. As one officer retreated, two others drew their handguns, and the sound of gunfire echoed. In the footage, the woman collapsed on the ground, where she was subsequently handcuffed by an officer. Paramedics arrived, rolled her onto her back, and provided initial medical treatment.

Manhattan Borough President Brad Hoylman-Sigal confirmed the stabbing incident via a post on the social platform X. The NYPD promptly shut down a portion of 7th Avenue and advised the public to avoid the area, cordoning it off with police tape as a significant number of law enforcement personnel remained nearby.
