Woman shot by US police after 2 people stabbed in New York’s Times Square

On Monday, a woman stabbed two people in New York City's Times Square, resulting in the death of one woman and leaving the other in stable condition. The incident occurred just before 4:30 pm near a New York Police Department substation, outside the iconic New Year's Eve ball drop building. The woman, aged 49 and from Queens, reportedly pulled out two knives from a shopping bag and attacked a 68-year-old man and a 32-year-old woman.

The victims were taken to the hospital; the man is stable, while the woman has unfortunately passed away. Police Chief Jessica Tisch reported that the woman refused to drop the knives and threatened to kill the officers, leading to a Taser attempt which failed. The woman was subsequently shot and subdued by multiple officers. The area, one of the most heavily touristed and policed spots in New York, saw a temporary closure of part of 7th Avenue as authorities worked the scene.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Police Commissioner Tisch praised the officers, stating that the situation could have resulted in more casualties. The woman had a documented mental health history with the NYPD, including incidents in 2018 and 2019, but no prior arrests. The police are investigating the incident, and no evidence suggests it was a terrorist attack. The names of the victims have not been released until their families are notified.
