Why attacks on Orengo, Linda Mwananchi expose Kenya’s dangerous road to 2027

Recent teargas attacks on political figures in Kenya have ignited discussions about the safety of the nation's political campaign trail in the lead-up to the 2027 General Election. Within a span of two days, Governor James Orengo of Siaya and opposition leader Linda Mwananchi experienced disturbances, prompting questions about the potential normalization of intimidation, violence, and disruption in Kenya's political landscape.

Orengo was teargassed during a Linda Mwananchi event in Migori, forcing him to retreat into his vehicle. The same day, his convoy faced further trouble when a vehicle was set ablaze in Awendo. The following day, teargas was once again deployed at a Linda Mwananchi gathering in Meru, disrupting a meeting that included Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and other opposition leaders.

While the underlying reasons vary, these incidents occurring in such close proximity raise concerns about the possibility of political violence becoming an accepted part of the campaign culture. This becomes even more critical considering President William Ruto's recent directive for security agencies to take firm, lawful, and impartial action against those financing, organizing, or perpetrating political violence.

Ruto has also warned against the rise of political gangs and called for pursuing all parties involved, including those financing or organizing violence.

For opposition politicians, each disruption could serve as campaign material, forcing them to grapple with the challenge of demonstrating that the government's promise of firm action against political violence applies equally to supporters and opponents of the administration. During the Meru incident, Sifuna defiantly urged his supporters, "Hakuna siku tear gas itamaliza mkutano wa Linda Mwananchi," emphasizing the impact of these attacks on political discourse.
