Valco-Kpone Road Turns Nightmare, Drivers Threaten Fresh Strike

The 7.2-kilometre Valco Roundabout-Kpone Junction road in Tema has deteriorated significantly, causing frustration among residents, motorists, and petroleum tanker drivers. Despite assurances from authorities, little progress has been made on the long-promised rehabilitation of the crucial industrial corridor. As of August 30, 2026, the road remains largely unfinished, with heavy use by tankers, container trucks, and other heavy-duty vehicles.

The deteriorating road has led to increased congestion, causing journeys that should take less than 30 minutes to stretch over three hours, especially during heavy traffic. Motorists report frequent vehicle breakdowns, increased maintenance costs, and concerns about road safety. Tanker drivers have threatened to strike again if authorities do not address their concerns.

The Ghana Petroleum Tanker Drivers Union warned that the poor road increases the risk of accidents involving petroleum tankers, potentially causing devastating consequences. The road is a critical route for transporting petroleum products, industrial materials, and cargo, serving major companies such as Volta Aluminium Company Limited, Tema Tank Farm, and others.

A prolonged disruption could impact businesses, fuel distribution, and the wider logistics and supply chain. Despite promises from the government since August 2020 and 2023, significant progress has not been made, raising questions about the repeated assurances.
