US strikes Iran for first time in a month, Tehran retaliates and reports casualties

Washington announced on August 31 that it had launched an attack on Iranian rocket launchers stationed on a small island in the Strait of Hormuz, marking the first US strikes on Iran in a month. In response, Tehran's Revolutionary Guard Corps reported casualties and retaliated by targeting US military installations in Jordan with ballistic missiles, causing significant damage.

The conflict comes shortly after the six-month mark of the US-Iran war, which had begun to subside. The US stated that its attack was intended to prevent Iran from launching sea mines into the strategic waterway. Earlier, US Central Command reported that it had cleared explosives from the Strait of Hormuz, a critical shipping lane through which one-fifth of the world's oil passes.

Iran has blocked the Strait of Hormuz for months, disrupting global oil supplies. Diplomatic efforts to end the conflict have thus far been unsuccessful, with a ceasefire agreed upon in April and a memorandum of understanding for a final peace deal signed in June. Despite these efforts, sporadic attacks have persisted, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz.

The last US strike on Iran occurred on July 29, following an attempt to ambush US forces in the region. Prior to yesterday's strike, there had been 13 consecutive nights of US attacks on Iran. Iran has retaliated by striking US facilities and allies in the Gulf region, including Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE. This exchange of strikes has raised concerns about the potential economic impact, as oil prices surged following the news of the US strikes on Iran.
